Prep Time 10 minutes
Cook Time 5 minutes
Total Time 15 minutes
Servings: 1 sun catcher

Ingredients

  • 2 sheets wax paper for each sun catcher
  • 3 to 5 old crayons vibrant colors work best
  • 1 cheese grater or crayon sharpener to make crayon shavings
  • 1 iron set to low heat
  • 1 sheet parchment paper to protect the iron
  • 1 pair scissors for cutting shapes
  • 1 piece string or ribbon optional, for hanging

Method

  1. Lay down parchment paper or newspaper to protect your workspace.
  2. Grate 3–5 colors of crayons into small shavings using a cheese grater or crayon sharpener.
  3. Place one sheet of wax paper on the protected surface. Sprinkle the crayon shavings evenly on top.
  4. Place a second sheet of wax paper over the shavings to form a sandwich.
  5. Cover the sandwich with parchment paper. Gently press with a low-heat iron until crayons melt and blend.
  6. Let the melted wax paper cool completely.
  7. Use scissors to cut out fun shapes like hearts, leaves, or suns.
  8. Punch a hole in the top and thread with ribbon or string to hang in a sunny window.

Notes

Always supervise children when using a hot iron. Use parchment paper on both sides to avoid wax buildup on your iron. Try seasonal shapes for themed sun catchers—like pumpkins for fall or snowflakes for winter.
