A vibrant, colorful "salt volcano" experiment in a clear glass container. Layers of oil and colored liquid create a volcano-like eruption, with a fluffy cloud of yellow and orange rising from green peaks.

Lava Lamp in a Jar

A mesmerizing science experiment using household items to demonstrate liquid density and chemical reactions. Perfect for kids and educational fun!
Prep Time 5 minutes
Total Time 5 minutes
Servings: 1 jar

Ingredients

  • 1 cup water Use room temperature for best results
  • 1/4 cup vegetable oil Any light oil will work
  • 1–2 tablespoons salt Table, sea, or rock salt
  • 2–3 drops food coloring Optional; enhances the visual effect
  • 1 flashlight Optional; adds drama to the bubbling effect

Method

  1. Pour one cup of water into a clear glass or jar.
  2. Slowly add one-quarter cup of vegetable oil. Let it sit for a few seconds until the oil floats on top of the water.
  3. Add 2–3 drops of food coloring using a dropper or pipette. Watch as the drops pass through the oil and mix with the water.
  4. Sprinkle 1–2 tablespoons of salt into the jar. Observe the salt dragging oil down and forming bubbly lava-like eruptions as it dissolves.
  5. Repeat the eruption by adding more salt. Experiment with different types or amounts to change the effect.

Notes

Place the jar on a towel or tray to protect surfaces from spills. Shine a flashlight from the side or below in a dark room for a glowing effect. This experiment is best for ages 4+ with supervision. Try using different salts to explore reaction variations.
