DIY Lava Lamp Magic

Turn your kitchen into a science lab with this fun, safe, and mesmerizing lava lamp experiment using just a few household items. Great for kids, parties, or relaxing at home!

Servings: 2 lava lamps

Ingredients
  

  • 2 clean, empty water bottles or Gatorade bottles
  • vegetable or canola oil enough to fill bottles ¾ full
  • water to top off the bottles
  • 4–5 drops food coloring choose 2 different colors for variety
  • 1 tablet antacid (like Alka-Seltzer) broken in half

Method
 

  1. Make sure the bottles are clean and dry before starting.
  2. Fill each bottle about ¾ full with vegetable or canola oil.
  3. Slowly pour water into the bottles until they’re almost full, leaving about 2 inches of space at the top.
  4. Add 4–5 drops of food coloring into each bottle. Use different colors for a fun twist.
  5. Break an antacid tablet in half and drop one half into a bottle.
  6. Watch as bubbles rise and fall like a real lava lamp. Enjoy the show!
  7. To reactivate the effect, simply add another half tablet whenever desired.

Notes

For a marbled effect, try mixing two food colors in one bottle. Experiment with different antacid brands for varying bubble intensity. Dim the lights and shine a flashlight through the bottles for a classic lava lamp glow!
