Prepare the Filling
5. In a small bowl, mix brown sugar and cinnamon.
6. If using canned filling, chop the apples into smaller chunks and drain well. If using fresh apples, cook them with a bit of butter and cinnamon until tender.

Assemble the Rolls
7. Roll the risen dough into a rectangle (about 16×12 inches).
8. Spread softened butter over the dough, sprinkle the cinnamon sugar, and evenly spread the apple pie filling.
9. Roll the dough tightly from the long side and slice into 12 rolls.
10. Arrange in a greased 9×13 baking dish. Cover and let rise again for 30 minutes.

Bake the Rolls
11. Preheat oven to 350°F (175°C).
12. Bake the rolls for 25–30 minutes, or until golden brown.

Make the Frosting
13. Beat cream cheese, butter, powdered sugar, and vanilla until smooth.
14. Spread over warm rolls and serve.

Notes

Avoid overfilling to prevent soggy bottoms.

Add a handful of chopped nuts for crunch.

These freeze well—bake and cool, then freeze without frosting. Reheat and frost when ready to serve.
