Description

Wondering can you put frozen chicken in a slow cooker? The answer may surprise you. While it’s tempting to toss frozen chicken straight into your crockpot, doing so can pose serious food safety risks. This guide explores the science, risks, and safe alternatives to help you cook flavorful, worry-free meals. Learn how to handle frozen poultry properly, when it’s safe to use, and which cooking methods offer the best results.

Ingredients

Scale

2 lbs chicken breasts or thighs, thawed

1 medium onion, sliced

2 garlic cloves, minced

1 cup low-sodium chicken broth

1 teaspoon salt

1/2 teaspoon black pepper

1/2 teaspoon paprika

1/2 teaspoon dried thyme or Italian seasoning

1 tablespoon olive oil

Optional: carrots, potatoes, celery for a full one-pot meal

Instructions

  • Thaw Chicken Safely:
For best results, thaw chicken in the refrigerator overnight or use the defrost function on your microwave. Never thaw on the counter.

  • Prepare the Base:
In a large skillet, heat olive oil and sauté garlic and onions until fragrant. Add to the bottom of the slow cooker.

  • Season Chicken:
Season chicken with salt, pepper, paprika, and thyme. Place over the onion-garlic base.

  • Add Broth and Veggies:
Pour chicken broth over the ingredients. Add carrots and potatoes if using.

  • Cook Low and Slow:
Cover and cook on LOW for 6–7 hours or HIGH for 3–4 hours, or until chicken reaches an internal temperature of 165°F (74°C).

  • Serve:
Shred or slice the chicken and serve warm with cooked vegetables or over rice.

Notes

Do not add frozen chicken directly to a slow cooker. It may stay too long in the “danger zone” (40°F–140°F), promoting bacterial growth.

For quicker results, use a pressure cooker or Instant Pot which heats rapidly and is safe for frozen meat.

You can also partially thaw chicken in cold water (sealed bag, changed every 30 min) as a faster alternative.
